I added the navigation links from the view mode to the edit mode as
well. (the ones that say 
start | previous 10 items | Items 40 to 50 of 144 | Next 10 items | End
)

I guess this will mostly give you the information you ask for here, and
will also provide an easy way to jump around a bit - even though it then
goes to view mode if those links are used.

I backported this to the 0.10 branch as well, so this will be in Pootle
0.10.1.  I hope to have the new POT file ready in the next day or so, so
that we can aim for a release quite soon.
