Sure, why not?  If you have the technical know-how, you will be in much 
better control of what you can do.  If you're using someone else's 
Pootle server (eg you're using locamotion.org's server) you are at the 
mercy of whoever is in charge there and also at the mercy of whatever 
services they are using.  This is not necessarily a bad thing, if the 
server you're using is run by competent people, but if you're a 
technically skilled person yourself, I'm sure you'll appreciate being in 
control.
