One way to address this is to remove some of the fancier RTF elements of the document and turn it into relatively plain text with whitespace between paragraphs. Then use the txt2po tool to convert it into a PO file. (and convert back into text file with po2txt once translated) http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/txt2po This provides the translator with bite-size strings to transalte and produces a text file that is easily dropped back onto a fancier RTF document template with your favorite word processor as part of your build process.
