Dave, There exists an EIA/TIA Standard (EIA/TIA-496-A) entitled "Interface Between Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment (DCE) and the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)." The one I am looking at is dated November, 1989 so there may be a more recent version. Within the documents SCOPE it states, "The requirements in this standard are intended to cover technical requirements of Part 68 of the FCC Rules that apply to this interface."
I have not used this document extensively, yet! However, from the few times I have perused the document, I have determined that it will be a valuable reference for sifting through the Part 68 requirements -- and it has more pictures, graphs, and drawings than Part 68. Check it out and let me know if it is helpful. Just as a side note, perhaps there is a means by which some of this stripped down information can be put on a web site. I get weary of reading through the legal "double-speak" just to figure out how to test to a spec or what dimensions I must use for approvals. It would be nice if there was an accessible web page that had regulatory documents pared down to, shall we say, "Just the facts, maam." I am not sure who or when or where or how this could come about, but considering all these list-server help groups to which I belong, the topic appears to beg for discussion.
