Hugh,
The Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) is not the same as the SMA C-Tick
mark.
The C-tick mark is a solid disk with a tick which makes the disc look like
a 'C'. This mark is a trademark owned by the SMA in Australia and the
Department of Commerce in New Zealand. The mark is used in Australia and
New Zealand to indicate compliance with EMC regulations. The mark is also
used in Australia in place of the 'AUSTEL PERMIT' on an the label of an
AUSTEL permitted product. (Re. AUSTEL TAG 3 issue 6)
The RCM is a mark for which the rules of the use are defined in joint
Australian/New Zealand standard, AS/NZS4417. The trademark is owned by the
regulators supporting the scheme. The mark consists of a triangle around a
'C' with a tick in the center. The RCM can only be used if the equipment
complies with the applicable requirements of all parts of AS4417.
The RCM mark is currently accepted by the SMA as a substitute for the
C-Tick mark. It is also in the process of being adopted by all the
electrical safety regulators in Australia and New Zealand, as a mark for
electrical approvals or certificates. Please note though, there are
currently some requirements in AS4417 part 2 which are in excess of the
minimum electrical safety regulations in Australia.
Proposals for the use of the RCM for Telecommunications, plumbing and
medical equipment are currently being worked on.
In summary, from the beginning of next year, it will be mandatory for all
electrical equipment sold in Australia which must be marked to display
the C-Tick mark. If the equipment is also certified by an electrical
regulator then the RCM mark can be used in place of the C-Tick and
electrical regulators markings.
