Chris-- we've just been reviewing a series of weird stories in the last 24-48 hours. There's been a shuffle in ther Federal Communications Commission, with two new members being anounced in the last day or so. The widely praised chair of the FCC, Reid Hundt, has tendered his resignation... and... the part that has peaked my curiousity.... AT&T and SBC have allegedly been engaged in cooperation/merger talks, according to a story that broke today in the Wall Street Journal at roughly 10 am UDT.. Such talks can't -- or shouldn't occur without someone at FC knowing about it, as such a merger would effectively undo the breakup of the old Bell system monopoly, at least in the West Coast. In fact I find it hard to believe that anyone would seriously think such a deal would pass muster with US regulators, under normal circumstances. There's also a hush-hush aspect to the whole thing. Now just because these things have occurred together doesn't necessarily mean they are related but I for one find it a damned interesting coincidence. Jack =================================== J.V.
