Okay, my turn to correct. SOUTHWESTERN BELL TELEPHONE company still does
exist in many states as local phone service operators. They are regulated.
SBC, its corporate parent, offers many other services and was involved in
the takeover of Pacific Telesis. Likewise, PacBell also still exists, also
to provide local telephone service. These subsidiaries have to be maintained
separately because they still are strictly regulated by the govt. They are,
however, owned and operated by SBC. If SBC and AT&T merge, they would be
involved in the deal and could become a stumbling block because todate, no
Bell Company (PacBell and Southwestern Bell) can provide long distance
service in their markets. AT&T can.
