Hi Treg, Mel, etc,

I believe the new "B" type surge applicable only in the US are the
following:

1000V, 25A 10x700 uS (Metallic Tip to Ring)
     1500V, 37.5A 10x700 uS (Longitudinal Tip/Ring to Ground)

Two repetitions in each polarity and the device must continue to operate
after the surges.

These are the same rise/fall time constants but I do not believe they
follow the voltage/current requirements of European Specification ETS 300 046
-1/-2.

These new surges are already applicable to ISDN and PSDS equipment,
because of Public Notice #70049 which came out on August 15, 1996 and was
effective November 13, 1996. I haven't heard of TSB-31(b) being released yet
as it is still in review at the FCC (Bill please correct me if I am wrong),
therefore the rest of the telephone interfaces covered under Part 68 (Loop
Start, Ground Start, DID, E&M, T1, etc.) are not currently required to meet
the type B surge.
