Paul,
following on from Duane's reply, here in UK, we found a number
of different protocols to show a message waiting if is is any use,
different manufacturers having different ideas. Essentially, there seems
to be no standard as such:
1) an interrupted or different sounding dial tone
2) a short ring chirp every X seconds
3) normal battery voltage reversed
4) battery over voltage to 100V
5) there are probably several others
Some manufacturers set this globally - all extensions use the same
method, some allow individual extensions to use different methods.
There seems no standard other than the manufacturers own engineering
specification.
We found a manufacturer has a vested interest in not telling other
people how he indicates message waiting as he can then sell his own
dedicated system phones to go with his PBX......it is a little difficult
to keep it secret though!
Perhaps if you have a specific PBX in mind the manufacturer will liaise
with you.
regards
Gerrard
