Vic, Although it does sound a bit phallic, the name actually comes from an engineer with the last name of Dongle. Who worked for a mainframe mfgr and came up the idea.
It generally refers to a small device on the end of a cable that becomes a functional extension of a larger device. Like a DAA I did for a hand held PC (HPC) manufacturer. The softmodem was in the HPC and the DAA was outside on the end of a short cable. Couldn't put it inside, the TBR 21 DAA dissipating 2.2 W would have cooked the LCD.
