Roger, are you _sure_ the plans are equal? I mean, if these data plan prices are exclusive to the iPhone, then they would indeed be _only_ EDGE and *not* HSDPA, so not comparable at all to EVDO.
Sprint, for example, has different pricing, I believe, for Vision (1xRTT) and Power Vision (EVDO)....at least they did when I last checked a while back. So, if you all were comparing the iPhone plan's pricing to 1xRTT-only plans, then that would indeed be an accurate comparison. I think you'll be waiting a while for an HSDPA iPhone. Quite a while.
