There are a lot of things the iPhone can't do that the Treo can, but the interface of the iPod is generally much more slick and pretty (except I think for the keyboard). Unfortunately a huge number of people care more about looks than substance, and as it is a ton of people don't want a phone that does half the things the iPhone does, let alone the Treo, so this would seem to bode well for the iPhone. Then again, the pricepoint is just too high for most people. When/if they get the price point down a little, it may take off. Even if I had AT&T service or was not under contract and had the extra $600 to blow, I don't think I would for these reasons:
I can't rely on access to wifi all the time (living in suburbia and constantly traveling on highways I have constant access to EV-DO, but wouldn't have such access to WIFI open networks. That might be different in the middle of a big city, but not here. Having to rely on EDGE would be like going back to dial-up after using broadband for years - something that would be pretty painful. Storage - I have my 60GB iPod 3/4 filled with audiobooks, photos, and music. I haven't even bothered to add much video because the screen is just not optimal for that, but although the iPhone's screen is better, it's still not even a wide aspect ratio. In any case, even without adding video, I would have to cut my content down 80-90%. That or carry both an iPhone AND an iPod, something that I find a bit absurd. When/if the iPhone comes out with an HSDPA or EVDO version with at least 30GB of storage, then I will start to consider it. Still, I think it would be difficult to give up my TOMTOM GPS Navigation and Audible Air. Add those two things, Pocket Quicken, more third-party applications in general (no closed system like the Sidekick), the ability to sync with exchange, flash and java, and I might even get one. But for me, anyway, it has a long way to go. What I do wish, though, is for the same touchscreen technology and interface but for a plain iPod without the phone. This would have an 80-100GB hard drive, and play the same stuff I can now - MP3's, AAC's, H.264 video, etc., but just have a bigger screen. It would have been nice if Apple set it up so you could actually use the entire front as a screen, thus providing a larger area to view and true widescreen aspect ratio. I guess I will also have to live with the fact that Apple will never provide the ability to play other types of video than their own favorites of quicktime/h.264. There are other such media players which have a huge variety of formats they play, but there's always something missing, if anything else it's support for Audible files, which is a must for me. Even if they have support for Audible files, the one thing that keeps me chained to my iPod is that it lets you speed up the playback (without distorting the voices), and thus lets you listen to something in less time. You can do something equivalent by processing the audio yourself, but this is a big pain in the butt, time consuming, etc. Levi > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Saturday, June 30, 2007 10:13 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [Treo] Temptation > > > Nice little summary.
