Since when does the battery only last a year? I'm sure there's slight
degradation over a year, just as with any battery, but I doubt you would
have to replace it. Also, although in other iPods you can't just pop in
a new battery like you would a Treo, you still can replace the battery,
it just takes a little more work, but there are plenty of kits available
and I think Apple also has a service to do this for you. The iPhone
doesn't have a lot of things the Treo does, especially a good base of
third party software and a community of developers (although dwindling)
that still making this software. Also it has a real keyboard, which the
iPhone doesn't. But it does have some things going for it, and to me
issues like a replacable battery are way down on the list of
disadvantages. Anyway, at this point I consider Apple a much more
competent company. Palm's giving up the Foleo is both good and bad. It
is good in that it shows that they are able to admit mistakes (kind of),
cut their losses and move on with their real best priority in mind. But
it also indicates that they are still making these big mistakes in the
first place. Apple, of course also makes mistakes and they seem to be
pretty responsive about them. This price drop is one big example. They
took 33% off the price of this iPhone, and if their patten holds up,
next year we will see probably 16GB and 32GB iPhones for $350 and $450.

I still won't go near them until they open up to developers more and at
least have models that can do HSDPA, but even then I'm loath to switch
to AT&T, so may have to wait another 4+ years (if ever) until they offer
it on other carriers. Then again, who knows, Apple may just change that
exclusive deal with AT&T too if they think it is preventing them from
gaining more customers. Heck, they now have this deal with Starbucks
for Wifi access, but really isn't this a deal with Tmobile? I mean
that's where Starbucks gets the Wifi, right? So who knows!
