This will indeed be interesting to see just how it's all implemented. On one end of the spectrum, this phone has very little data (except for media one wants to have locally) inside it. Instead of the old model, where there's a local copy of everything that gets synced to a desktop, the Pre would just pull in all the user's data as needed from the cloud, storing none of it. In that sense, it's truly just a window to the Internet with a nice interface...a revolutionary, but possibly problematic, approach.
On the other end of the spectrum, the phone retains local copies of everything it pulls down, refreshing off the cloud only when it can, is needed, or is requested by the user. That would make it more of an evolutionary approach by combining the current model with some Internet savvy. The problem here is what happens if you make changes both on the device (while offline) and online...how does it reconcile those changes? But this approach makes it far easier to make local backups in case, uh, the Internet is destroyed? :-) As I'm a pure coward when it comes to my PIM data, I really hope there's a sensible backup plan for data, and not just settings. - Craig On Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 6:09 AM, Alli <[email protected]> wrote: > Something that restores all my settings and something that restores > *everything* .... could be a world of difference there. > > Gmail wrote: >> how about this from the article; "but the phone does come with an >> automatic wireless backup feature, good for restoring all your setting >> in case something bad happens to the handset."
