And in exchange for functionality. As far as I know there are no IM clients for the iPhone that will actually receive messages while doing anything else, say browsing the web. All of the apps are sandboxed so they can't talk to one another or share data. There may be exceptions that Apple has built in explicitly but in general that is true and is touted as a 'feature'. Apple has a built in "kill switch" so they can delete any app of which they do not approve. And according to what I have read while reading the Pre press releases the iPhone will not do multitasking which is surprising considering it is built on OSX, aka FreeBSD. All of this is a HARSH penalty to pay for a little stability. Sure my treo performs an unplanned reset every couple of days. But in general its when I am not using it and I have never lost any data so its relatively insignificant. All this is accomplished with the PalmOS which is NOT a multitasking OS. And on my treo 755p I can receive IM's while browsing the web, reading email, navigating using google maps or reading a pdf. Of course, IM is just an example. There are a number of other similar things. My $0.02, -Harry
