Your server must offer both then, and the Pre is choosing IMAP because it's technically better. Therefore, everything you do to the Email on your Pre or your server with another Email interface will be synced to all IMAP clients accessing your account on the server. As such, you'll need to get used to the way that IMAP operates. You can limit the amount of Email on your Pre by only syncing certain folders, and moving messages out of folders that you do sync with your Pre.
