I've found a workaround for the Pre automatically (and incorrectly) identifying my POP3 email account as IMAP. If I misspell my email address in the email account setup screen, the Pre complains that it was not able to connect to the server and offers a MANUAL CONFIGURATION option. By using that I was able to properly set my account type to POP.
