In the 7 months I've had a Pre, I haven't found that turning it on or
off helps consistently WITH ONE EXCEPTION.

That exception is in low-cellular-signal areas. If your carrier is
only giving you 1 or 2 bars and you have access to a wi-fi signal, by
all means use it instead of 3G data. It'll save a ton of battery that
way.

But, for "out and about" running errands and such, I rarely turn off
my Wi-Fi...mostly because I forget, but partly because I haven't found
a compelling battery usage reason to do so.

YMMV.
