Yes, Kobo is designed to work only with their own books.  That is 
definitely a limitation, but my e-reading practices (as a matter of 
fact, my reading practices in general) are generally to use these for 
fiction books that I don't plan to read again, so once I finished all of 
the eReader books I had bought, I didn't have much reason to go back and 
reread them.

Kobo's selection hasn't been great so far, but it's been good enough and 
more convenient than the other options, since I can buy and download the 
books right from my Pre, without needing the desktop.

Your mileage will obviously vary...
