I have had no problems with ereader books. PReader recognizes PDB (Palm format) books without issue. Turns out the Barnes and Noble book downloaded came in the same PDB format - I did not do anything to make that happen (that I recall).
I will be trying Amazon - maybe tonight. One interesting (bad) thing from the iBook and iPad stuff - ereader lost access to tons of books and now seems to be a shell of its former self. So much that I don't even go there any more. I check in but if they don't have the books I am not going to purchase a romance novel just because they have them. I just recently downloaded a book from them and all was good), but for Amazon... I'm going to guess that the Kindle versions won't work. I didn't try... but from my research so far, I believe I was going to run into problems. If you try it via Amazon (in the Kindle format?), please let us know if it works, in which format, and if it is DRM'd. P.S. I also was able to get a book to work via ebooks.com. I believe I specified the "Mobipocket" format. FWIW, I also have the Kobo book app on my Pre (which seems okay, but I believe that it only allows you to load a book that you actually buy from them via the Pre... I haven't seen where you can open/import another type of file)... and I tried Popelli reader, but due to some issues/problems, I decided to delete the app. Thanks.
