I have Photo Dialer, which works well enough but I'm afraid you are going to run into the same problem you've had with Quick Contacts no matter what app you use because the Pre sometimes just gets laggy and takes a long time to load anything. Best option might be ti just keep whatever app you settle on running all the time - which you certainly could do with a Pre Plus. My memory-hobbled Sprint Pre is much more prone to memory issues the more stuff I keep open...
