When you say you can "avoid data charges" what exactly do you mean?  I don't
know about Verizon or AT&T, but for Sprint, the only option is to get one of
the "everything" plans, which includes "unlimited" (aka 5GB) of data, which
is actually fairly difficult to go over, but in any case you can't get a Pre
with an option that doesn't include 3G data.  Perhaps you can on one of the
other providers?  I know AT&T just changed their plans a bit at least for
iPhones but perhaps for all their phones whereby you can pay I think it's
just $5/month for 250MB/month, or $25/month for 2GB/month.  Perhaps if you
know you can keep under 250MB/month, you can avoid all but $5 for data, at
least for AT&T?
