Which brings up an interesting point about rules of grammar, and the
huge difference between breaking them on purpose (which in my line I do
occasionally) and by ignorance (which seems more the norm). I just
texted my daughter that "I'll fridge 'em," meaning I'll put
granddaughter's no-bake cookies in the refrigerator to see whether that
helps them harden.
Which brings up another bothersome construction: Normally, one
would say "to see if that helps them harden," but "whether" has a
different meaning than "if," and I think we normally use "if" when we
mean "whether."
OTOH (is that a word), there is something to that notion of fluid
language.

If brute force isn't working, you're not using enough of it.
