Here's a reply to the same issue from a while back from Michael Hodish: TreoI've been fighting with the instability of this for months... often getting the error message about "serial port not available, in use by another application", or something like that (shows on the phone).
The error log contains: "Protocol Error: Unknown error. (6410)" Following many many repetitive fixes found on line was fruitless. Finally, came across a support page on palm.com for network synching, of a different device, but giving the same 4 digit error code in the log... and it says that if you have MEDIA files on the SD card, it will do this. Remove the card, and, presto, synching works like it should have all along. I guess some how if you have media files on the sd card, that occupies a serial port. Weird. At any rate, I hope this is useful to someone else.
