Rich text mail is readable by most (if not all) modern mail clients, including text based ones like mutt.
If you sent this in rich text, then I must disagree; your message was completely indistinguishable from what you were quoting (it was not preceeded by any quote character).
I use Mulberry and can choose whether to read the text/plain bodypart or the text/enriched bodypart. With text/plain the quoting was there. With text/enriched it wasn't.
