I too get disk errors when booting:
hda: dma_intr: status=0x53 { DriveReady SeekComplete Index Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }
ide0: reset: success

but things seem to work fine after the initial boot. I have not run the deep test with smarttools yet.

Am I a disaster waiting to happen?

Possibly.

I was getting messages like this starting about three months ago:

EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,1)) ext2_write_inode: unable to read inode block inode=3015009 block=6029322
ide0: reset: success

About a month, that drive completely died and I started to notice that files were missing... Important files, like sendmail (oops!) or files in the /etc directory (bigger oops!). My recommendation would be, if you want to keep using this drive, back up /var and /etc nightly... When I reinstalled, I had to almost completely reconfigure. It was a pain. (Lost all the mail in my inbox, too.)
