You can remove the notification applet like any applet: right-click on it and  
choose "Remove fro the panel". However, since this applet is newer in Gnome,  
I believe the intended use is to keep this applet and remove the old "volume  
control" applet.

You should check whether your keyboard preferences really include several  
layouts (left click on the applet, etc.). Indeed, mine does and the applet  
indicates the one in use.
