When last I said this was working at home, that was premature. The
router was still dropping calls after about a minute, and the echo
server at ekiga.net was not sending my packets back, though the one at
iptel.org was. I double-checked the port triggering/forwarding setup on
my router, no joy. When I set this machine as the 'dmz', the calls to
echo test do not get dropped. If this machine were always turned on,
I'd never do this.

Please, tell us your results. Remember to reboot your router after
changing the port forwarding, if necessary.
Maybe your router can assign the public IP to your computer. It was
necessary for me once, but maybe it has security issues, so better
turn it off when you stop using ekiga.
