I do not believe this to be true, firstly the Wikipedia page for Unity states that is uses these licenses: GNU General Public License (GPLv3), GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPLv3)
Some developers are paid to work on Unity, which if I remember correctly Stallman encourages developers getting paid as long as the resulting code is free software.
