I heard Cinnamon is coming out with a fallback option like Ubuntu 2D that  
doesn't require potentially non-free video drivers. Someone also mentioned  
MATE but that is seen as a temporary solution.

I'm still itchin for that trisquel-unity package though with Unity 2D :-)
