It might need a CPU microcode update in the BIOS, it needs to run the VGA BIOS of the graphics card (Radeons need just to read it, not run), it might have an embedded controller (all laptops have them, none run completely free software on it) and it has firmware in other devices like disks or wifi cards (although these probably can be considered hardware).
