Not really a good example. By that standard all non-free software is OK. None of it is OK. It is an example of an extremely difficult situation to avoid with no good solution. In comparison there are many free desktop environments. There shouldn't be anything wrong with MATE though anyway from an ethical or free software perspective so your still OK here. Even though it comes from the Linux Mint project the developers aren't writing non-free code. There bundling non-free code. There is a difference. So while it is OK to use the code which they produce it isn't OK to use the distribution.
