Maybe better to upgrade than downgrade... you could try a new linux-libre  
package and see if that helps...
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linux-libre/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo  
apt-get install linux-libre; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
this will install the new linux-libre image (3.7.3) plus the extra package  
which should include the functions you need. (i have an eee pc and all  
function keys work well)
