I've always liked the idea of using GNU/Linux to give old PCs new life. The
problem is recycling hardware is hard. It isn't always clear cut what works
and what doesn't. Little issues crop up so easily. For instance you can spend
an hour to get everything assembled that works with GNU/Linux and free
software only to find out that the system is very unstable. It could be a
bug, it could be a defect (frequently happens with donated PCs and why people
got rid of them in the first place), and it could be in any number of
components. Trying to deal with this is less of an issue if your only taking
hardware in bulk though (20 - 30 + machines at a time).
