having read the thread you linked to this was indeed the problem. To solve it  
I went to Update Manager - Trisquel Software - Download from -  Other and  
then selected a server in France. All works fine now.

However: when selecting to automatically find the best server it would still  
direct me to the defunct one... that's a bad idiot's trap:-)
