Thanks for the replies everybody. I had suspected that the updated base of
Trisquel 7 would solve this problem, but if and when I get a working computer
I will definitely try your suggestion, Lembas, so thanks for that.
I say if and when because this morning I have been arranging to return the
computer in question. I finally fixed the net install problem - all it
required was to switch the bios to legacy. However, confusion was caused by
the fact it seemed to take a dozen re-boots for these changes to be suddenly
adopted. Once I was able to boot from the net install disc, everything went
fine and I installed Triskel with nothing unexpected happening. Upon reboot,
the desktop was as expected albeit with the signs of video driver issues.
However, following the next re-boot - nothing. The computer froze on the bios
splash screen and I can do nothing with it. After running the same computer
for 8 years without a single hitch, I must admit to being pretty annoyed with
this.
To Chris: The computer in question is a Zoostorm model. I'm not sure these
can be bought outside of the UK and they are a cheap model, largely targeted
I think at business users. The bios they use is ASUS with an H81 motherboard
(not sure of the make). The only reason I went for this computer is because
I'm on a low budget and it was the lowest price barebones pc I could find
with a decent spec. Definitely a case of lesson learned though. If I can, I'm
going to try and get a refund rather than a replacement and put it towards
something that might respect my freedom more. Can I ask if Think Penguin ship
from the UK? I would love to buy a computer with linux pre-installed, but
I'm slightly put off by the idea of unknown import costs.
