I don't think it follows that because proprietary drivers are "better" than free drivers (in a shallow sense of practical convenience), hardware manufacturers are therefore more skilled at writing said drivers. In the case of GPUs, Intel only develops free drivers for its integrated graphics controllers, AMD refuses to publish a large part of their GPU specs, and Nvidia refuses to publish any of their GPU specs (although the Nvidia might shift to a position more like AMD in the near future, from what I've heard). It seems obvious to me that AMD's and Nvidia's proprietary drivers work more effectively because developers of free drivers for these GPUs have almost nothing to work with.

If anything, the amount of progress Nouveau has made with absolutely no help at all from the manufacturer is a testament to our community's ability to take care of the software portion of these devices ourselves.
