I would argue it is prudent to install an anti-virus, e.g. ClamAV. Otherwise it's a similar situation to Macs: "they don't get viruses", apparently, until they do. Considering that GNU/Linux is most prevalent in academic institutions and government (as opposed to the consumer market, although usage is pretty low everywhere), it means that these are lucrative targets, and inevitably there will be malware produced. ClamAV also finds Windows viruses so you could clean up some external drive for example.
