Correction: people have to make money. An unfortunate reality all artists
face is that art doesn't make a particularly large amount of money unless
you're extremely popular. This has always been the case. Artists make art
despite this, and where they can't make money from their art, they make it
elsewhere.
I don't know for sure whether or not the model of using copyright to forbid
sharing is helpful to indie game developers. I suspect the answer is "no",
but even if the answer is "yes", it's still extremely unlikely for any indie
developer to make a huge amount of money off of a game. There can only be so
many games that lots of people buy.
I accepted a long time ago that my game development efforts are probably not
going to make me a whole lot of income. That's why, while I'm making efforts
to make some money from the games I can potentially make some money from, I
also have a regular job.
