When I tried backing up onto an external HD my computer gave me a message  
about not finding a network- I don't understand this, does network reference  
mean being online or sharing with other computers? so what's this about? Do I  
have to be online to do personal backups? I sure hope not. I have Trisquel  
with the GNOME shell on a converted hp machine.
