"Backups" is a front-end to 'duplicity', the command-line tool. The first  
backup takes a loooong time since everything is copied to your external  
drive. A window should show the advancement with a progress bar.

The backup is not made to be directly readable. "Backups" is integrated with  
the file manager. Try it: right-click on a file/folder and choose to restore  
older versions of the files or files that were removed.
