I can see the appeal of a traditional desktop or laptop with GNU/Linux for a programmer or tech savvy person at a university, but if they are an engineering or computer science student, they are aware of alternatives or run GNU/Lunux already.

As for the average 18-22 year old, they are more concerned about image and conformity at this stage in their life. Hence the Apple laptop for school and their Beats by Dre headphones plugged into their iPhone when they walk around campus. They don't care about software freedom or privacy as they post every detail of their life online since it is convenient. I know what I am saying may sound shocking to you, but it's what I noticed when I visited a family member on campus last month.
