It looks a different card than my older model thinkpads, but in the back of my mind I keep having this niggling suspicion that I might not have been completely off base upthread.
If it were my computer or I were setting it up for a friend, I would try editing network interfaces and rc.local (while saving the originals) before giving up on the hardware.
