I deleted the mail itself by finding it via http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird#Linux_and_Unixalthough after reading Magic Bannana's comment and taking a look at my log folder I believe that the repeating firmware error was the real cause of my shrinking disk space.
