Yeah, don't reinstall just yet. I would indeed expect updating to solve this (and I'm glad you have the same expectation. :) You're learning). However, you already tried updating and it didn't fix the problem. This is the part that perplexes me. What I wanted you to copy/paste was the contents of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' Run $ pluma /etc/apt/sources.list and copy/paste the contents of the file that opens up.
