You can try to manually update the kernel (a deblobbed one, like  
Linux-libre). When I was still using fixed release distributions, I often  
manually install newer kernels (and remove older ones).

In recent years, I switched to rolling release distributions like Debian  
unstable or openSUSE Tumbleweed (both deblobbed and non-free repository  
disabled) so I always have latest kernel.
