I never claimed to quote the exact words when I used the word "Bible." I paraphrased the passage. The problem is that the Book of Mormon is very unclear and unspecific on this point. The Book of Mormon is apparently difficult to understand, especially in this place, and has led us to different interpretations regarding its meaning. Blaine made it clearer for us when he said that "the book" was referring to the Bible. Once we knew that, then we understood why you always say that you believe the Bible as far as it is translated correctly. For example, consider this verse 29 in total. It makes for very awkward and confusing reading: "And after these plain and precious things were taken away it goeth forth unto all the nations of the Gentiles; and after it goeth forth unto all the nations of the Gentiles, yea, even across the many waters which thou hast seen with the Gentiles which have gone forth out of captivity, thou seest -- because of the many plain and precious things which have been taken out of the book, which were plain unto the understanding of the children of men, according to the plainness which is in the Lamb of God -- because of these things which are taken away out of the gospel of the Lamb, an exceedingly great many do stumble, yea, insomuch that Satan hath great power over them." (1 Nephi 13:29) Phew. Now that long sentence is an exceedingly difficult passage to read. That's why you always quote only part of it, and why I paraphrase it the way that I did. If I had written a sentence like this in an essay at school, my English teacher would have jumped all over me and not accepted it. In any case, the subject at hand is not Joseph Smith or Oliver Cowdery's English. The subject at hand concerns what is meant to be conveyed by this passage. My paraphrase is that this passage is meant to say that the Bible, in its present state, missing many plain and precious parts, is something which has enabled Satan to have great power over an exceedingly great many people. Your paraphase is that the parts that are missing has caused Satan to have power over them. Your paraphrase does not make logical sense, because if there were missing parts, these would not be the source of deception. People are not deceived by what they don't know, but by what they do know, if that knowledge is incomplete or false. People are deceived when they receive partial and misleading information. So it is the alledged corrputed Bible which can only be the meaning of this passage. Why you refuse to admit this is truly amazing. Peace be with you.
