Both. Words primarily communicate knowledge. Sound primarily communicates
emotion. Words also might communicate emotion, such as when you read a love
poem, etc., but this is secondary. Sound also might communicate knowledge,
such as when the trumpet blows the call to arms or warns the town of a
certain event, or when used as morse code. Nevertheless, when we are
talking about music, the sound is generally the vehicle that conveys the
emotion, and the lyrics generally convey knowledge.
So the question is: Are some forms of knowledge evil, such that we should not entertain ourselves with them? Are some emotions evil, such that we should not entertain ourselves with them? I answer yes to both questions.
So if musical sounds makes you feel sensual, or independent and self reliant
and proud, or hateful, or other such emotions, then it should be avoided.
Music can put you into the spirit and cause you to prophesy. That is a great thing. Music also can cause you to be in the flesh and feel a gratification of the flesh. That is a bad thing.
Peace be with you. David Miller, Beverly Hills, Florida USA
