Have you ever really had a problem, even as a child, confusing superstitious beliefs and real guilt?

No, not at all.   I do understand the difference.   My conscience gets them confused.
I am limiting my comments to the work of the conscience as I experience its influence.   Superstition:   when I came home tonight and got out of my Silverado, I had to make a choice.  --- to walk around the back side of the truck (thus bring me good luck) or walk around the front of the truck and take my chances.  I know it sounds silly, but I decided to go to front of the truck and trust in God.  Now, as silly as I have admitted this to be, it is my conscience that gives me this choice.

Then it is our own choice. Donât you think we are to remind, encourage, exhort each other continually regarding righteousness so that we donât get slothful about it,

I agree, actually, with the entire paragraph represented above.  You are obviously communicating with me while I am somehow tiptoeing through the tulips.   But we are on the same page in regard to your concerns.
