DaveH,

Something is being twisted here beyond it's bounds. The term "street preacher" refers to all evangelicals that preach in the open air, but you are using it to refer to those that offend you.

DAVEH: ??? I don't recall saying any of the street preachers offended me. Are you certain that is what you think I said, Perry? If so, may I suggest you misunderstood me.

That is not fair, it is a stereotype based on the actions of just a few by your subjectivit judgement.

DAVEH: ??? You are losing me on this, Perry. How did I stereotype the street preachers? I thought I had qualified them as some, or such, with each post where I spoke of them protesting in SLC. Did I forget to do that on any of my posts? If so....I did it inadvertently.

This is analagous to homosexuals calling someone "homophobe" because they disagree with the lifestyle choice. DaveH, are you a HOMOPHOBE?

DAVEH: Not in my opinion, but I suppose there are some gay folks that may think so, simply because I am on the opposite side of the fence. It is kinda like you suggesting that I stereotype all the street preachers because I am on the other side of the fence on this issue than you. I wonder if you aren't reading a lot into my posts that I never said....

Quote some of the stuff that you feel portrays me the way you see it, Perry. Maybe I'm to focused/biased to see my on faults.

Probably not by the definition of the word based on it's latin roots (one who fears homosexuality), but according to the homosexuals, you may be because "as they define it", they use it to mean anyone who does not agree with their lifestyle choice!

DAVEH: That's the way I am perceiving your current criticism of me, Perry. Simply because you've read some of my posts about the street preachers antics in SLC, you are assuming something that I neither said, nor pertain to me.

I suggest instead of using the term "street preachers" to refer to those you do not like,

DAVEH: Whoa there, fella.....when did I say I didn't like street preachers?

And...what is wrong with that term? Everybody seems to use it freely in TT. Do you think I should not use it because my theological philosophy contrasts yours/theirs?

and insulting all open air ministers, choose another designation, one more descriptive of the group you are trying to disparage.

DAVEH: Yikes!?!?!?! Am I.......or, have I disparaged anybody in TT???

Kevin....you would be the obvious one who would feel offended by my posts.....have I posted anything that offends you....ever???

How about you, DavidM.....Are you offended by anything I've posted?

Any other TT street preachers feel offended?

In pondering that, Perry....I've reflected back on a few others I've chatted with here over the years....Carroll and Rubin, to name a few. Both have left TT, but I don't think I've offended either prior to that. Maybe I am blind to my own blundering way though. Has anybody any inclination of whether or not I offended C or R?

Well Perry....how about you. Are my posting manners offending you? What did I say that you feel has impugned your street preacher integrity? In my below post, I've tried to convey how the world may perceive Christians who do things they may feel contrast their perception of Christianity.

Let me offer you an example, Perry. IF I were to go to SLC during conference time, and find an obnoxious person blathering away about my religion, I may get so wound-up and frothing at the mouth over what the guy is yelling at me that I lose self control and slug him out of frustration. Clearly, I'm in the wrong about that, as the street preacher could be doing exactly what he is legally entitled to do....shout his criticisms at the top of his voice. Now...by escalating the situation up a notch by my unchristian behavior, have I not given my cause (Mormonism) a black eye? Not only will all the street preachers their witness my unChristian behavior, but they will tell their friends about how unruly and hypocritical my actions were. The perception becomes that my religion (LDS) condones violence in an effort to silence someone purporting to be a Christian. It seems to me, Perry, that IF I were to do such, it would harm other LDS folks because of the perception that LDS folks get violent.

That's why I have asked the question as to whether street preachers ever consider the effect they have to the outside world when they perform some of the antics they do to publicly embarrass Mormons (or anybody else)? IOW....do they ever have strategy sessions about whether or not to do something because of their concern about the image they are portraying of Jesus to the non-Christians? So far....I don't recall anybody answering that question, though I've asked it several times.

DAVEH: I'm not concerned for the LDS folks, as much as it troubles me how the world perceives Christians treating others who have contrasting beliefs. I wonder if the street preachers consider the impact they have on Christianity as a whole. I also ponder how Jesus would view their antics.

I suspect there are a lot of people who judge Christianity on the acts of those they know who may proclaim faith in Jesus, but act in a less than Christian manner. Have you ever heard non-church folks complain how they know Christians who are hypocrites? Sometimes we make excuses for them, saying that hypocrites belong in church. While that may be as good an excuse as we can offer in explanation of a Christian hypocrite's bad behavior, how does one explain to a non Christian the behavior of those Christians who attempt to humiliate and denigrate other human beings in an effort to promote their brand of Jesus? Does that really promote the image of Jesus' love for us that many Christians want to share with the world? Seems like a conflicting message to me.

Kevin has a point here, Dave. If the Street Preachers are driving the LDS members closer together, shouldn't you be happy about that? Maybe the LDS organization should be paying the Street Preachers to come to your conferences. :-)

Peace be with you.
